NIMITZ RENOVATION: Some BIG doings in Fredericksburg this month ... details coming up on Passport to Texas ... (Feb 19) ____________________________________________________________ Passport to Texas from Texas Parks and Wildlife After a three year renovation, the old Nimitz Hotel in Fredericksburg -- known as the Admiral Nimitz Museum -- will reopen with a celebration on Sunday, February 25. That takes place forty years after it was initially opened as the Admiral Nimitz Museum Center - on his birthday - in 1967. :11 Helen McDonald, director of programs at the museum, says renovations to the boyhood home of the WWII commander in chief of the Pacific were extensive. We have a new roof. We did asbestos abatement; all new HVAC; electric ... plumbing ... and two new exhibit galleries. :10 Formerly managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, today the Admiral Nimitz Foundation under an agreement with the Texas Historical Commission currently operates the site. We loved being with TPWD - they got us off to a grand and glorious start. And we're just moving forward at flank speed - as they say in the navy :10 The ceremony begins at 1:30, Sunday February 25 at the museum. Keynote speaker is retired General Michael Hagee, 33rd commandant of the Marine Corps. Others responsible for seeing the renovations to fruition will also be in attendance. You're invited, too. Because it is essentially Nimitz' birthday, we will have birthday cake, and coffee and lemonade in the courtyard. There will be music going from the moment the ribbon is cut and the doors are open, right on through the closing of the day. :15 Get full details at Nimitz-museum.org. That's our show for today ...
